Algae-Based Wastewater Treatment Service

The ability of mixotrophic microalgae to use organic and inorganic carbon as well as inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater for growth achieves the desired result of reducing the concentration of these substances in the water.

As a pioneer in algae research and application development, Lifeasible can provide professional, high-quality, and efficient algae-based wastewater treatment services through our experienced team.

Status of Wastewater Treatment

The primary objective of wastewater treatment is to significantly reduce the number of carbonaceous materials and, if sensitive waters are involved, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) compounds prior to discharge into the receiving system. Conventional wastewater treatment has two main drawbacks. One is the high energy consumption and the other is the large amount of dry solid sludge that can be produced during the wastewater treatment process.

Microalgae for Wastewater Treatment

Microalgae, including eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria, have been shown to be an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to the energy-intensive and conventional biological treatment processes currently in widespread use.
Phosphorus Removal - The use of algae in synthetic wastewater allows for efficient phosphorus removal and recovery and reuse from the phosphorus-rich algal biomass obtained.
Carbon Removal - To efficiently capture CO2 and remove nutrients from wastewater, micro-fermenters have proven to be a potential source of energy production.
Nitrogen Removal - Microalgae can utilize organic nitrogen, such as urea, and inorganic nitrogen, in the form of ammonium/ammonia, as well as nitrite and nitrate.
In addition, wastewater treated by algae-bacterial co-culture does not need to be transitioned through different operating environments and requires only a single treatment stage, thus reducing the complexity and energy of the treatment process.

Factors Affecting Algae Treatment

An important factor affecting the performance of microalgae treatment is the composition of the wastewater.

  • Three Main Factors
To grow and perform their wastewater treatment functions, microalgae require three primary nutrients: carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The utilization of nutrients by microalgae is closely related to their growth, and the limited availability of one major nutrient can significantly reduce their growth rate.
The amount of carbon in wastewater is one of the main rate-limiting factors for microalgal growth. Therefore, the amount of carbon in wastewater is often increased by adding organic carbon to the microalgal culture, such as glucose, glycerol, acetate, or ethanol, and other carbon sources include mono- and disaccharides such as fructose, sucrose, and lactose.
  • Other Factors
In addition to this, trace amounts of micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, silicon, zinc, and iron are essential and are generally abundant in wastewater.
