Microalgae consist of a biodiverse group of photosynthetic organisms that are found in water sources and sediments. The large number of high-value chemicals extracted from prokaryotic and eukaryotic microalgae includes compounds used in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, such as beta-carotene, astaxanthin, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Asexual reproduction allows for effective population increase but less possible variation, while sexual reproduction allows for more mutations and provides the benefit of efficient recombination repair of DNA damage during meiosis, a critical stage of the sexual cycle. Nevertheless, sexual reproduction is more costly than asexual reproduction. Meiosis has been proven to take place in many different species of algae.

Although algae are extremely adaptable and do not need to create a special environment for their natural growth, it is necessary to effectively control elements of the environment such as nitrogen and phosphorus ratios, temperature, culture solution concentration, and pH value in order to be able to meet specific goals, such as increasing the protein and pigment content of microalgae.

Extensive experimental research work has shown that different culture conditions, such as light intensity, nitrogen, and phosphorus, have different effects on algal culture. Different species of algae require different light intensities. In addition, for different environments, the reproduction rate of the algae themselves also varies greatly.
