Algae Isolation Services

Microalgae are single-cell biosynthesis factories capable of accumulating valuable bioactive compounds. To achieve commercial robustness, there is an urgent need to explore regional microbial communities for potentially commercially valuable strains of microalgae adapted to local environments. Lifeasible has been dedicated to algae research for many years and has built a comprehensive platform for algae research. Through in-depth communication and cooperation, we provide professional algae separation services to our customers.

Introduction to Algae Isolation Methods

Microalgae live in a variety of environments. Water samples for microalgae separation can be taken from any body of water. Usually, single-celled algae suitable for hydrostatic culture grow in small puddles left by the coast after low tide and in small puddles on farms or salt farms. In order to isolate and obtain purer algae, various isolation methods are applied.

Fig.1 The icon of micropipette.

Micropipette Isolation - The moment the micropipette is placed into the sample, the capillary automatically draws in a tiny amount of water sample. Microalgae are drawn into the capillary with the water sample. The aspirated sample is blown onto a slide and observed under a 10x or 20x microscope to see if pure species separation is achieved. The procedure is repeated several times until a single target species is obtained.

Water Droplet Isolation - Using a micropipette, the algae solution is pipetted out of the dilution, and then the smallest possible droplets are placed on the slide. This is repeated until only pure species of individual algae are present in a drop of water.

Dilution Isolation - The water samples need to be diluted to contain approximately one biological cell per drop. The dilution process is then examined with a microscope and the dilution is adjusted. Then one drop of the properly diluted water sample is added to each test tube and incubated. When the algae grow and multiply to a certain concentration, a microscopic examination is performed to confirm whether the separation purpose is achieved. Repeat the above operation until pure species separation is achieved.

Plate Isolation - This separation is basically the same as the plate separation method for bacteria, but with different medium formulations. Dilute algae solution can also be loaded into a sterilized small sprayer, and the algae solution is sprayed on the plane of the medium to form a thin layer of evenly distributed water droplets. After more than ten days of cultivation, the pure algal community is examined by microscopy.

Isolation of Benthic Algae - Individual algae are picked under a microscope and then inoculated on solid media plates. Repeat the picking and incubation steps until pure species isolation is achieved.

Our Services

Algae isolation is the first step in algae culture. From the mixed biota in natural waters, the desired algae individuals are separated out by certain methods, and pure species culture is obtained. As a professional algae research specialist, Lifeasible provides algae isolation services to advance your project.
