Algae Lipid Content Analysis Service

Lipid content can be used as an important index for algal strain screening since it is one of the most valuable algal products.

As a global algal analysis and research company, Lifeasible has specialized equipment and teams to support algae lipid content analysis services.

The Lipids in Algae

Algal biomass consists of major components, which include lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins, as well as minor components such as vitamins, like β-carotene and sterols, and hydrocarbons. The major lipid classes of algae are membrane lipids, such as glycosylglycerides, phosphoglycerides, and betaine ether lipids, and storage lipids which are in the form of triacylglycerols. Algae also possess small amounts of other lipids such as terpenoids, sphingolipids, hydrocarbons, sterols, and of course pigments, the proportion of these lipids present varies depending on the class of algae.

Algal Lipids for Biodiesel

The biodiesel potential of oily microalgal biomass is mainly related to the productivity of neutral lipids such as triacylglycerols (TAGs) and free fatty acids (FFAs) achieved during the culture process. Neutral lipids, such as TAGs and FFAs, and polar lipids, such as glycerol-based and phospholipids, are high-potential components for biodiesel production with fatty acid structures C12-C24 similar to those found in vegetable oils and fish oils. TAGs from microalgal biomass are converted to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) as biodiesel by the usual chemical hydrolysis followed by esterification or in vivo enzymatic esterification.

Algal Lipids as Nutraceuticals

Most microalgal biomass is a rich source of ω3 and ω6 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with very high iodine values of 90 to 140. Studies have shown that EPA and DHA are important for normal fetal development, including neuronal, retinal, and immune functions. EPA and DHA may affect many aspects of cardiovascular function, including inflammation, peripheral arterial disease, major coronary events, and anticoagulation. EPA and DHA are associated with prevention, weight management, and cognitive function in patients with very mild Alzheimer's disease.
