Algae Strains
Introduction to Algae
Algae are a broad community of diverse, typically single-celled, photosynthetic microorganisms from marine, brackish, freshwater, or terrestrial environments. There is growing interest in the uses of microalgae, including animal feed, aquaculture, biofertilizers, waste contamination remediation, nutrients and chemicals for food production, nutraceutical supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, cosmetics, biofuels and bioenergy, pharmaceutical products, colorants, antioxidants, and flavorings. These applications all rely on the characteristics and chemical composition of the different algal species and strains.
Different Algae Species
It is estimated that there are thousands of microalgal species with different characteristics. In addition, strains of microalgae belonging to the same or closely related species will have distinct properties and will differ in their chemical composition due to living in different environments and adapting to the different physical conditions of those environments. Of these many possible strains, only a relatively few have been collected and stored in various laboratories and cultures. Besides, only a small number of strains of different species have been characterized physiologically and biochemically, and an even smaller number of strains are currently in commercial use. Although most of the available microalgal strains remain largely uncharacterized, the few strains with desirable characteristics have been studied extensively. However, the identification of strain characterization information is challenging and is often found in many different and sometimes inaccessible literature sources.
