Description:

This is transformant NP-5, from transformation of MUT-125 with DNA from plasmid P-400 (no longer in the collection) containing a site-directed mutation (psbA-NP) in the C-terminal extension of the psbA gene. The mutation changes a Ser (UCA) to stop (UAA) codon in the C-terminal extension of the D1 protein, thus causing the cells to produce a mature D1 protein that requires no further processing. It was found that these transformants are indisinguishable from wild type cells in terms of photosynthetic performance and growth rate under CO₂- and light-saturated photoautotrophic growth conditions.
