Microalgae are tiny plants and their important species contain diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and golden algae. In the literature on molecular biology, microalgae are considered to be a group of microorganisms that acquire chloroplasts independently. Although microalgae do not contain roots, stems, or leaves like higher plants, they do exhibit certain characteristics similar to those of organelles. Like all eukaryotes algal cells contain membrane-bound organelles, including a nucleus that contains their genetic information. Recently scientists have used various molecular biology techniques to identify families of algal taxa and their relationships to other taxa, most of which are still ongoing.
