Danaus plexippus is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is amongst the most familiar of North American butterflies and an iconic pollinator, although it is not an especially effective pollinator of milkweeds. The monarch was the first butterfly to have its genome sequenced. The genome provides researchers insights into migratory behavior, the circadian clock, juvenile hormone pathways, and microRNAs that are differentially expressed between summer and migratory monarchs.
