Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid, a thiourea derivative of histidine, containing a sulfur atom on the imidazole ring. This compound is found in a relatively small number of organisms, notably actinomycetes, cyanobacteria, and certain fungi.
In humans, ergothioneine is obtained exclusively through the diet and accumulates in red blood cells, bone marrow, liver, kidneys, semen, and eyes. Ergothioneine is sold as a dietary supplement.
