Protocerebrosides are cytotoxic and genotoxic in direct correlation with tumorigenesis in the urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract. Protocerebroside is rated as a Group 2B carcinogen by the World Cancer Organization, and protocerebroside is most abundant in the young shoots of ferns.
