Streptococcus thermophilus is derived from dairy products. It is an oxygen-consuming gram-positive bacterium with two oval-shaped cocci linked into long chains of about 0.7 to 0.9 microns. On selective media, Streptococcus thermophilus grows into beige colonies. Streptococcus thermophilus - Metabolism and Growth Streptococcus thermophilus is a homofermentative bacterium, during fermentation, it produces L-lactic acid and folic acid. Under laboratory conditions, Streptococcus thermophilus can be grown in M17 medium at 45°C under anoxic conditions.
