Gene Knock-out Services in Cyanobacteria

Gene functional study in cyanobacteria has attracted much interest from researchers all over the world, due to the biosynthetic and ecological potential. All capacities of cyanobacteria are regulated by their genes, and the most efficient method of gene functional study is gene knock-out.

Lifeasible provides our global customers gene knockout services in cyanobacteria, with which the cyanobacteria cells of interest can be delivered in four weeks. Our technology is based on recombinases system, and by exploiting the polyploidy of cyanobacteria's genome as a counter-selection system to achieve markerless gene knock-out.

Gene Functional Study in Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria are one of the most ancient organisms on Earth, and they have been playing the most important role in biochemical cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. Due to these features, cyanobacteria have attracted much interest in studying the mechanisms and employing the new findings in applications.

Due to the rapid development of molecular process of genetic, systematic and synthetic engineering, the biorefinery and biosynthesis have been developed with higher rate, higher titer and better productivity as well.

Relationships Between Humans and Cyanobacteria

  • Biotechnology
Dur to the ability of cyanobacteria converting sunlight energy into electricity, they are potential to generate renewable energy, such as diesel, gasoline, fuel and ethanal.
  • Heath Risk
Some cyanobacteria can produce neurotoxins, cytotoxins, endotoxins, and hepatotoxins, which are collectively known as cyanotoxins. They are harmful to humans and other species.
  • Human Nutrition
Some cyanobacteria contain ingredients of high nutrition value, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, pigments, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These compounds are antiviral activity against virus, including HIV, herpes, and hepatitis.

Typical Stains

We provide gene knock-out services in all cyanobacteria strains, including but not limited as follows.

  • Synechocystis sp. PCC6803: The most widely utilized cyanobacteria chassis. It is widely used for the studies of core photosynthetic complexes due to its capacity to be grown under photoautotrophic, mixotrophic, or heterotrophic conditions.
  • Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942: The first reported strain to be transformed through natural DNA uptake pathways. It's been extensively used as a model of the circadian clock.
  • Nostoc sp. PCC 7120: A filamentous freshwater cyanobacterial strain, and it's used extensively as a model to investigate cellular differentiation.
  • Synechococcus sp. PCC7002: A commonly used and fast-growing marine cyanobacterium which display better tolerances to high temperature and strong illuminations.
  • Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973 and Synechococcus elongatus PCC 11801: Strains with faster growth rate but close-related to slow-growing S. elongatus PCC 7942. Can be used to understand the basic metabolism and to study the mechanism behind.

Our Services

Cyanobacteria participate in biochemical cycles by anabolism-catabolism. For assisting researchers all over the world studying the mechanisms of these reactions and how they are regulated by genes, Lifeasible offers full-coverage gene knock-out services of interest for our customers.
