Nostoc sp. PCC 7120 is a model cyanobacteria commonly used to study cell differentiation and nitrogen metabolism. It’s capable of fixing nitrogen by forming heterocysts, which are differentiated cells that efficiently catalyze the reduction of dinitrogen, or be exploited for hydrogen production. The complete genome of Nostoc sp. PCC 7120 comprises a circular chromosome and six plasmids.
Nostoc are heterocyst-forming, photoautotrophic cyanobacteria that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. They can be found in various of habitats, both terrestrial and aquatic. And they can survive in stressful conditions such as fluctuating temperatures, drought, salt stress, desiccation, UV radiation, and so on.
