Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 is fresh water cyanobacteria which holds a very important role in the development of cyanobacterial molecular genetics. In last few decades, many genetic tools have been established with PCC 7942, which are also applicative in other cyanobacteria strains. It’s an obligate photoautotroph, with the genome of approximately 2.7 Mb. Two plasmids have been sequenced entirely, with the size of 46 and 8 kb respectively.
It has taken a pioneering position as a model to study prokaryotic circadian clock. And it’s also widely used to study carbon capture, nitrogen fixation and transition, adaption to stresses and responding to environment change.
With the respectively small genome and thoroughly studied genetic tools, PCC 7942 are genetically modified to be platform of producing compounds including fatty acid, recombinant proteins and biofuels. And it’s also potential in bioremediation, which can disgrace toxic compounds like herbicide, pesticide and petroleum.
