Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 is a euryhaline, unicellular cyanobacteria, which is capable of growing over a wide range of salinity and which has tolerant of high-light irradiation. Besides, PCC 7002 is facultatively photoheterotrophic with glycerol as substrate, has an obligate requirement for vitamin B12. And it doesn’t fixation nitrogen. As a model organism, it’s widely used to study the mechanism of photosynthesis, the regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism, as well as other physiological and metabolic processes.
Under the optimal condition, its doubling time of 2.6h is one of the fastest among reported cyanobacteria. PCC 7002 is naturally transformable, which makes it an excellent platform for biotechnological applications, such as production of recombinant proteins and biofuels. As a model organism, genome of PCC 7002 has been sequenced entirely, as well as its transcriptome. With the size of 3 Mb, its genome contains 6 plasmids with size ranging from 4.8 to 186 kb.
