The methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris (Komagataella phaffii) CBS7435 is the parental strain of commonly used P. pastoris recombinant protein production hosts making it well suited for improving the understanding of associated genomic features. The Pichia pastoris expression system is a eukaryotic expression system that has developed rapidly and is widely used in recent years. Due to its abilities of recombination with foreign gene and processing large proteins, it has been employed as transformation host of producing new proteins and artificially designed proteins.
P. pastoris has two alcohol oxidase genes, Aox1 and Aox2, which can be induced by methanol, and repressed by glucose. And they can grow with extremely high cell density on the culture.
