The P. pastoris GS115 strain is derived from the wild-type strain. It has a mutation in the histinol dehydrogenase gene (HIS4) and was generated by nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis. It is the most frequently used Pichia strain for heterologous protein production. It consists of 9.4Mb in 4 chromosomes with 5,313 predicted protein-coding genes. Additionally, the P. pastoris GS115 has high GC-rich preferred codon usage, suggesting that the transcription and translation of GC-rich genes may be improved when using this biont as a host. It has a high growth rate and is its ability to grow on a simple, inexpensive medium makes it suitable for both small and large scale production. Compared with other yeast strains, P. pastoris GS115 are capable to grow to very high cell densities, which can multiply to the point where the cell suspension is practically a paste under ideal condition.
