This rare, tufted endemic, thriving on the dry hills above Oregon's Umpqua River, displays bright purple cruciform flowers on rounded shrubby domes, with conservation efforts in 2001 attempting to safeguard it from extinction by growing hundreds of plants from wild seeds.
