A perennial, mat-forming grass creates a solid sward of low green leaves, topped by heads consisting of five radially arranged purple stems, reminiscent of birds' feet. Thriving down the east coast of Africa, from the Red Sea to the Transvaal, it is most densely found at the Uganda-Zaire border.
