Both silk protein fibers and spider silk proteins are natural materials with multi-level structures, and the excellent combined mechanical properties of both are inextricably linked to their multi-level structures. The seemingly smooth surfaces of silk and spider silk proteins fibers are composed of many oriented nanofiber bundles, which have a fishing net-like structure composed of β-folded crystals and amorphous proteins interconnected. β-folded crystals act as nodes carrying stress in the fishing net-like structure, while amorphous proteins like a rope connect one node (β-folded crystal) to another, forming a structure that is both flexible and strong.
