  • Oligonucleotide DNA probing. This test is based on the hybridization of a DNA probe with the target nucleic acid (frequently a gene for toxin production or a species-specific 16S rRNA sequence) which is unique to the organisms been tested.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This technique is a rapid microbiological testing method and is more applicable when small numbers of a particular microbe are present. This method is based on the specific recognition of DNA or RNA fragments that are unique to the target microorganism.
