Introduction of Functional Nitrogen Fixing Enzymes in Plants

More than half of the world's food consumption is currently produced using synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Nitrogen fertilizer production consumes much energy. Still, crops only absorb a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer, and more than half of it leaches from the soil, causing not only environmental pollution but also energy consumption. Since plants cannot fix their nitrogen, introducing biological nitrogen fixation into crops is necessary to reduce our dependence on nitrogen fertilizer and protect the environment while maintaining agricultural productivity.

Lifeasible continues to explore strategies to reduce dependence on nitrogen fertilizers for agricultural production and proposes to use biotechnological approaches to introduce functional nitrogen-fixing enzymes genetically engineered into plant cells to help plants absorb atmospheric nitrogen and reduce crop dependence on industrial nitrogen fertilizers. We have assembled functional nitrogen-fixing enzymes in plants by expressing prokaryotic nitrogen-fixing gene products to provide a feasible solution to achieve the reduction of nitrogen fertilizer use in agricultural production, to help green agricultural production, and to promote sustainable agricultural development.

Introduction of nitrogen fixing enzymes (genes) into crops

Nitrogen fixation enzymes are unique enzyme complexes capable of producing biological nitrogen fixation in diazotrophic bacteria, and their biosynthesis and function require a multigene assembly pathway. Also, given the functional requirements of nitrogen-fixing enzymes the mitochondrial matrix was found to be a suitable location for nitrogen-fixing enzyme recombination and activity. Therefore, we used genetic engineering techniques to introduce nitrogen-fixing enzyme genes into target organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts in plants to help plant nitrogen-fixing enzyme cofactors to complete biosynthesis, which can effectively reduce the dependence on nitrogen fertilizer in agricultural production. We provided an effective research strategy to improve crop yields and promote green agriculture.
