Gene editing is also called genome editing. Gene editing technology has been of great value in plant protection. It is promising to edit plant genes and pathogen genes to protect plants (Fig. 1). Gene editing-based methods for plant protection are continuously developed with the development of CRISPR/Cas. For example, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated multiple gene editing of three TaEDR1 homologs in wheat shows resistance to powdery mildew. In addition, gene editing technology combined with RNA interference technology to develop host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) also plays an important function in plant protection. HIGS-based control of pests, plant fungi, and plant viruses is achievable. Using gene editing technology to protect plants from pests and diseases is considered promising.
